Anton chose the light without thinking, chose it because they told him he was different now, changed, and the light sounded closer to his old life than the darkness. He wanted his old life, he didn't want to be what he changed into: A seer, a hunter, an Other. He wanted to be Anton again, just Anton, but neither side could give that to him.

He did what he was told, learned the rules, thought them to be right. Until he met Kostya, until he talked to a vampire instead of hunting him or ignoring him, and Kostya was so damn normal. A grumpy teenager with eyes that could glow red, a friend, and then, after everything went so very wrong, the only one he could talk to. The only one who listened when he spoke about his son, when he remembered the wife he lost, when he wondered about what could have been.

Weeks later, when the war had turned into open combat, they still talked. Minutes and hours stolen from an invisible battlefield, and when words turned into kisses and pauses turned into sex, Anton wasn't surprised.

He knew it wasn't about love, it wasn't even about sex. It was something different, something he couldn't name, only feel when he was with Kostya. It felt like satisfying a hunger he never knew before, a hunger for life and warmth. A hunger for something different, something untouched by the war and the sides fighting it.

And when he was with Kostya, when Kostya's teeth scraped over his skin and made him bleed, when he sucked at Kostya's neck as if he was the vampire instead of his lover, the hunger faded away.

Later, after the words and the sex, Kostya's eyes turned red and Anton knew that he wasn't the only one feeling this hunger, he wasn't the only one satisfying it between walls and sheets.

They were the same, Kostya and him, vampires of a different kind.
