Later, when the fight is over, he walks through the debris left behind. He ignores the small fires and the smell of melted plastic, searching for the smell of burned flesh instead; wondering if anything is still left of his Janus.

He bends down sometimes, scanning the ground, reaching out to touch a piece of fabric here, something that looks like splintered bone there. The white plastic is still hot and he throws it away, irritated at his failure to find what he's searching for. Irritated at the search itself.

It's senseless and useless, searching for the remains of a criminal, searching for it like he needed it. A proof of his death isn't necessary and still he hungers for it.

He never said good-bye.

Stepping into the center of the area he looks down again. Janus died here, taking Alec's body and the rest of his face with him.

He wonders where Alec's smile has gone.
